Jealousy on Toast

Me (having a conversation with Grandma): "Blah, blah, blah, something about jealousy."

Hollis: "Mommy, we're not supposed to say that."

Me: "Say what, Hollis? Jealousy?"

Hollis: "Yeah. Jealousy's a bad word."

Me: "Says who, sweetie?"

Hollis: "Miss 'Rie." (His sitter, Marie.)

Me: "Is it that you're not supposed to say jealous, or you're not supposed to get jealous."

Hollis: "I'm not supposed to get jealous."

Me: "Oh."

For a moment I contemplated the maturity of my 3 year old, who could apparently somewhat comprehend the complicated emotion that is jealousy.

Hollis: "Jealousy goes on bread and peanut butter."

Oh well.

  1. It is so hard to explain that emotion. Have you read him "Simon and Molly Plus Hester"? It is a good book for explaining jealousy.

  4. Hmmm, we can't get 'jealousy' in England. We can only get jam.

    How completely adorable!

  5. I love those moments: You're picking out what shoes you are going to wear to the Nobel Lareat's Dinner in his honor, and then he pulls you out of fantasy land with the peanut butter-type comment!

  10. When The Princess acts jealous of Junior Mayhem, he and I start this little chant that drives her bananas. It goes something like this, "TP has jealous pants...when I say jealous...you say pants.....jealous!...PANTS!" It can go on and on and on! It is great fun and it makes the point!

Hey...remember me? Tall, obnoxious redhead who normally stalks you on the net? Just checking! (hee-hee.....I haven't been around that much lately...just giving you a hard time!) :)

Hope your Christmas was jealous pants free!
